Step 2: Review the safety information:
-
Always wear secure, closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty or torn.
-
Do not wear or bring any valuables--dogs especially may grab onto and take something that isn't theirs.
-
Leave purses and other items in your locked vehicle.
-
Ensure one gate or door is securely closed before opening another.
-
Pay attention to animal. body language and do not force interaction. Many dogs and cats DO NOT enjoy being hugged or kissed by a stranger.
-
Always watch minors who accompany you and make sure they aren't entering or leaving any areas on their own.
-
Ask staff if you have any questions or concerns. Do not try to break up any animal fights or catch an escaped animal on your own. ALWAYS alert staff in event of an emergency.
-
OPTIONAL: The Fear Free Shelters program is a fantastic training for reading animal body language. It's free and you go through the modules at your own pace. Check it out: Fear Free Shelters
